This fixture saw league leaders Selston entertain Holbrook St. Michaels, who were next to bottom at kick off.  It was the home team on the front foot as the game began, and the first real chance came in just the fifth minute -  Sean Gregory played in Dominic Airey who picked out Kane Hempshall in the area, and although the winger connected well enough, the visitors had enough defensive cover, and the effort was blocked.
Wayne Cooke was tripped on the edge of the box on 13, and a free-kick duly awarded. Jamie Renshaw stepped up but fired well over the bar. Tom Widdowson was played through on goal three minutes later, but although he raced into the box before firing, his shot flew high, wide and not very handsome…
Hempshall was upended in the box with 19 played, and BEN MOORE coolly fired the ball past Gaz Young to give the home team the lead – a lead that was thoroughly deserved. Holbrook had defended very well up to this point, but were undone again two minutes later when they allowed a cross to  find TOM WIDDOWSON two yards from goal, and the youngster wasn’t going to miss from there.  Selston had chance after chance as their visitors struggled to cope, Cooke, Moore and Hempshall had decent chances either saved by Young or hacked away by the Saints defence.

Moore had a crack at goal from 25 yards in the 24th minute, but again Young was alert and tipped the ball over for a corner.  Renshaw found himself running in at goal on the half hour mark, but it seemed the actual run had taken it out of the full back, and his shot was a little tame, to say the least.  Holbrook had a chance to pull a goal back on 37 when Grant Hackett committed a foul just inside the Selston box, and they were awarded a penalty of their own. Unfortunately for the Saints, Matt Pierce’s spot kick was well saved by Jake Ball in the home net.

Sean Gregory had a 20+ yard shot tipped over by Young in the 41st minute, but the visitors had the final attack of the half when Jordan Butcher’s neat cross had to be hacked away from in front of goal by Rory Davis. H-T 2-0
It was Holbrook who began the second half on the front foot – and within 6 minutes of the restart had halved their deficit. It was all hands to the pumps in the home back line as they tried desperately to clear their lines, but one clearance fell straight to the feet of  EMMANUEL FREEMAN and he gleefully drilled it past Ball from 8 yards.
Emmanuel Freeman ready to pounce.....

With Selston struggling to cope with the revived away team, it took a special goal from SEAN GREGORY on 57 to ease the home nerves. Receiving the ball some 25 yards from goal, the no. 8 hit a sweet drive off the outside of his boot that flew past Young before nestling in the corner of the net.  Great technique from Sean -  a shot with pace and accuracy, and definitely one for him to add to his scrap book.
With just over an hour played the game was effectively over and the visitors’ revival ended. This time it was a corner from Moore that was played to Cooke,  and when his shot hit the bar it left DANIEL HENSHAW with a close range header, which he duly despatched.
As the temperature dropped, both the camera and the notepad were put away – and to be fair, not a lot happened during the final 25 minutes or so. F-T 4-1
With Teversal Reserves defeating Linby, they leaped above the Mikes who now lie 15th and bottom of the league.
Holding hands with the best friend.....

Do you realise how popular you are when your best mate won't even come to the game with you?

Alternative blog entry title 2:
Ayup, it's Mary Effin Poppins!!!

Thanks a bunch: Steve Reading - I will get you back at play-time

Date: Wednesday 22nd February 2017 - ko 7:35pm

Competition: Notts Senior League Cup 1/4 final

Admission: £0.00

Programme : £1.00 (first ever publication by Ravenshead FC)

Venue: The Cornwater Ground, Ravenshead, Notts.

Attendance: Impossible to do a head count, but I imagine 130-150,  somewhere in that region

Conditions: Started dry enough, but a constant drizzle began about 30 minutes into the game.

A decent crowd was expected at this game - the Cornwater looked to be a ground that many of the nations hopper fraternity had yet to sample.

This was NSL Div 2 (Ravenshead FC) v NSL Premier (Flowserve) and although the premier league team were successful in reaching the semi-finals of the NSL Cup, they were made to fight for their victory by a very resilient Ravenshead outfit.

The ground itself is very basic - partially roped off, no hard standing, no dugouts. It appeared that there were designated "technical areas", even though they were just goal frames lying on the ground! It did get a bit soft underfoot as the rain made it's presence felt, but hey ho - that's what you get with the non league game at times!! There is a nice slope behind the top goal and I'm sure in summer it's a great vantage point - but I reckon it would have become a bit of a slippery slope as the rain continued..

Teams:

Ravenshead: Callum Marks, Brad Martin, Luke Williams, Mark Yates, Dave Harkin, Paul Smith, Sean Creer-Thornton, Dan Phillips, Jamie Foster, Tyler Lambert, Adam Martin. Subs: Chris Bovey, Tom Goodson, Tom Hubbard, Ashley Martin, Joe Warner

Newark Flowserve: Nathan Burrows, Ben Hodge, Ryan Ashley. Ricky North, Ryan Broxholme, Daniel Richards, Callum Barnes, Tom Potts, Chris Self, Bob Walker, Billy Storey. Subs: Nicky Walker, Daryl Price, Joe Hurst, Lewis Lambert, Kyle Nicholson.

Ravenshead took the game to their premier division opponents from the first whistle, but a combination of poor finishing and smart 'keeping from Nathan Burrows kept the scores level. Flowserve had a couple of decent chances as the half progressed, but at the break it was goal-less and we were dreading the spectre of extra-time as by now, the incessant drizzle was beginning to get annoying. So much so that I decided to make the long trek back to the car to collect my brolly - hence the Mary Poppins reference!!

The teams had a mere 5 minute break, but I was back pitchside in time to the start of the second period. Great timing as the visitors took full advantage as the home team forgot to switch back on - a ball over the top picked out TOM BETTS who calmly lifted it over the advancing Callum Marks into the net, thus allaying all fears of a nil-nil.

This seemed to knock the wind out of Ravenshead, and in the following few minutes Flowserve had several decent chances to increase their lead, but the hosts resisted the pressure - until the 53rd minute that is. Another ball was played through the home defence into the penalty area, and when POTTS and his marker slid in to get to the ball, it ended up in the far corner of the net. It was difficult to tell who actually had the final touch, but the goal has been credited to Potts, and I'm sure the defender won't want an OG against his stats...

Callum Barnes had a great chance to add to Flowserve's tally midway though the second period, but after a terrific mazy run, he fired tamely wide. No more goals, lots of banter - most of it at the expense of yours truly - but all in good fun -- I HOPE! F-T 0-2

Basford Utd 2-1 Loughborough Dynamo

Date: 18th February 2017

Competition: Northern Premier League Division 1 South

Attendance: 150

Admission: £6.00 / £4.00 concession

Programme: £2.00 - with team sheet

Before you ask, I did pay for it!!!

Thought I would be on my own for this one as Kev had family business to attend to, but not so as Alan and Chris, our friends from Heanor Town were on hand to keep me company...

No point writing too much - the Basford goals are on video, so with pictures painting thousands of words, I will add links to the relevant web page.

Loughborough are struggling near the bottom of the league, with Basford lying comfortable in 6th place.  It was the visitors who had the first real chance of the game on 12 minutes, Karl Demidh's shot flying past the outside of the post with Deeney well beaten. Sam Osbourne was booked on the half hour mark for reckless challenge, and when the free kick was nodded down in the box, Demidh was again on hand to send a shot goalwards, but on this occasion the effort was tipped over superbly by Deeney.

Basford opened the scoring on 33 when Osbourne played the ball into the box, carried on his run and received it back a few yards from goal before stabbing it home. The lead lasted only 12 minutes though - Loughborough levelled through Karl Demidh, drilling the ball low past Deeney after he was picked out 12 yards from goal by Ash Hodgkinson. H-T 1-1

Two minutes into the second half, Jarrod Holmes made a rash challenge on Kyle Dixon and was, quite rightly, shown a yellow card. Ten minutes later, Holmes made another rash challenge and was duly shown a second yellow, followed by a red.

A man down, Dynamo were put under the cosh by their hosts, and when Fabian Smith's free-kick on 59 landed in the six yard box, Riece Bertram back-heeled it home - pity he and two other Millboys were off-side!!

Basford restored their lead on 65 when Dixons "shot" got a double deflection, hit the inside of one post before rolling across the line and in at the other one! Dynamo went down to nine men in the 79th minute after Elliot Hodgett-Young tripped Courey Grantham as the substitute was played in on goal. Although the offence was 20+ yards from the visitors' goal, Referee Keith Salmons showed the no. 3 a straight red, I assume for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Going down to nine seemed to galvanise Loughborough though, and they almost secured an unlikely looking draw with four to play, United having Deeney to thank after he made a cracking save from Jack Andrews' fierce drive.  F-T 2-1

Not the best game I've seen at Greenwich Avenue, but great to see 150 people in attendance.  I was asked by Basford Director Neil McGowan if I could remember a season where one club had teams in both the Notts. F.A. Saturday Senior Cup final as well as the Saturday Intermediate Cup final. I looked through my records, and checked with the Notts. F.A. records that are available, and the answer is no - although I am prepared to be shot down in flames by other, more studious personages!!

Basford Utd CFC 7-2 Hucknall Town Reserves

Competition: Notts. F.A. Intermediate Cup Semi-final

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Notts

Admission: £2.00 concession

Kick-off: 7:45pm

Attendance: 124

It’s been a funny few days since my blog entry on the West Bridgford game. Wednesday afternoon I was at Highfields to see the University of Nottingham Men’s 2nd lose 3-0 to Oxford Brookes Men’s 1st.  The third goal was a 30-yard stunner that the Nottingham keeper could only admire as it flew past him and into the net.  The skies had darkened as half-time approached, so I decided to fetch my brolly from the car during the break. This decision paid dividends, as midway through the second half the heavens opened and we were treated to a downpour of almost biblical proportions – and it was this downpour that effectively killed the Wednesday evening football programme. So – no game Wednesday night, but the big question was, will there be a survivor on Thursday? As it happens there was a game at Clipstone, the pitch deemed to be perfectly playable by Referee Tom Beard. This game saw Dunkirk’s U19s hand a 4-0 defeat to Mansfield Town U19s, and worthy victors they were.  Rob Waite’s report from the game can be found by clicking HERE.

Friday afternoon was supposed to have been Ilkeston FC U19 v Maltby Main U19 at the New Manor Ground, Ilkeston, but upon arrival with Mr. Mac at the NMG it was apparent that the game wasn’t on….or so we thought.  New Ilkeston boss Shaun Goater was on the pitch taking training, and Macca asked him if he knew where the game was being played and he said Eastwood. So off we went to Coronation Park, only to find – no game! After giving up, I later discovered the game was actually played at Basford, the venue for my Friday night game!

This Notts. F.A. Intermediate cup game had an advertised kick off of  7:30pm. We actually got underway at 7:45pm,  although I have no idea what caused the delayed start to the evening's proceedings.

Basford opened the scoring in just the 5th minute after a mistake by Town keeper Keeton Sharpe saw the ball end up with EZRA KUTINGANO and he duly despatched it into the top corner.  KUTINGANO was on the score sheet again with 20 played – then seconds later he became provider, firing the ball across the goal to the far post where JACK DUFFY was on hand to slot home. Five minutes before the break, the home team went further ahead, courtesy of a ZAIRE BIRCHALL-JACKSON strike . H-T 4-0

The Basford fifth goal came on 66, again Kutingano was the provider. This time the winger's tricky feet left his marker on his backside, and the resultant cross found GIDEON BOATENG who controlled superbly in front of goal before lashing the ball home. RICKY SAXBY slid in at the far post to open Hucknall’s account in the 77th minute, but BOATENG soon restored the home team's five goal advantage, powering home a header that went in off the far post. Two minutes later Basford added their seventh. Sharpe and BOATENG collided in the box and when the ball popped out of the keeper’s hands, the striker was left with an open goal to roll it into. After a brief consultation with his assistant, the Ref gave the goal, despite the Town players protestations.

Hucknall grabbed another goal on 87, SAM BOOTH smashing the ball into the roof of the net from the corner of the box. A terrific strike that I thought was arguably the best goal of the night, and the applause from around the ground seemed to echo my thoughts. Town were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds of the game, but Danny Brown dived to his left to save. F-T 7-2.

Great entertainment throughout the 90 minutes – and Basford will play AFC Dunkirk in the final at Eastwood on Friday 5th May –looking forward to that one!!

Saturday 18th February - local teams in action

Hopefully the majority of the games will be played. The Wednesday deluge was a game killer, but with the forecast of "precipitation probability" at only 5-10%, the pitches should have time to at least partially recover.

Tuesday 14th February 2017

East Midlands Counties League

Venue: Regatta Way, West Bridgford

Admission: £5.00 / £3.00

Attendance: 63

We’d never been to the home of West Bridgford FC before, so another new ground goes onto the list.  Regatta Way is only 25-30 minutes on the road from Hucknall, and is relatively easy to get to and locate, so I have no idea why we’ve not visited previously. It was a pleasant evening, with little breeze and the temperature approaching double figures – a tad different to our previous few outings, where the temperature had struggled to reach one or two degrees!

No problems parking – quite a decent sized car-park, although there seemed plenty of room on the street should a game attract a larger crowd. Entering the ground the first thing we noticed was the fencing surrounding the entire playing area – creates a neat and tidy appearance. The only cover was the Tom Maccabee stand – plenty of seating if the weather is inclement. We didn’t do a 360 of the ground, but we will be paying another visit sometime in the near future, in daylight hopefully, and take a proper gander at the facilities.  First impressions though were very favourable.

The Bridgford line-up contained a few familiar faces, but I had no idea of any of the Borrowash players’ names,  so this is going to be another short report…..

The game began at break neck pace, with both teams showing both pace and ability. Borrowash had the first real attack just a few minutes from the off, their no. 7 shirt outstripping Jonathan Ventralla in a straight race before hitting a shot that the home keeper blocked.

The Vics’ custodian had to be alert to tip over a long range effort in the 8th minute, and his opposite number duplicated this feat ten minutes later as both teams continued their frantic start to the game. All the first half endeavours came to nought though, and the teams went in at the break for a well earned rest with no goals to show for their efforts. H-T 0-0

The home team finally broke the deadlock on 53 minutes, AKINTOMIDE JAIYEOLA stooping low at the far post to nod home a Tim Hopkinson corner. To their credit, the Vics didn’t let going a goal down get to them overmuch, although their attacks did become a little less frequent as the game progressed.  Bridgford gradually gained more and more control of the game, and their solid looking defence was looking less and less likely to be breached.

The home teams lead was doubled in the 69th minute. This time the roles played for the first goal were reversed, a Jaiyeole corner met by TIM HOPKINSON at the far stick, the striker rising like “me grandmas soufflés” to send his powerful header into the back of the net.

Bridgford had a few decent attempts late on in the game and Carl Westcarr had a chance to add to the score in the 76th minute, but fired just wide with the keeper beaten. F-T 2-0

Referee Mr. Will Murray had an outstanding game - another young official with his head screwed on the right way. He respected the players and let them get on with the game, and also was never over fussy as some officials can be at times - let's hope he doesn't get this coached out of him.

The win puts the home team three points clear of Birstall Utd at the top of the EMCL table,  both having played 31 games. With eleven games still to play, the battle for the championship is still well and truly on.

We hadn’t been to the Town Ground since the end of December, and on that occasion, the Lions went in at half-time a goal down to Tividale, and went on to win 4-1.  This game also saw the home team go in with a one goal deficit at the break, and once again, we saw them turn the game on it’s head to secure an unlikely victory.

Kev’s grandson Owen was with us for this game – the choice of shopping with Grandma or football with Grandad was not a difficult one for the youngster to make!

Heanor looked a little off the pace early doors, and had keeper Joe McCormack to thank for keeping the score sheet blank. He made a couple of superb saves to keep the rampant visitors out, but he couldn’t stop CHRIS HAM’s powerful header from a right wing corner on 13. The striker met the ball perfectly, although it should be noted that McCormack had little defensive cover – and giving a six foot plus striker a free header in the six yard box will not please the Heanor management team over-much!

Nathan Benger was making his 250th appearance for the Lions, but despite have a couple of half chances, never looked like scoring from free play. Heanor’s best chance of the half came just before the break, but Joe Naylor on the far post and with the goal gaping, somehow managed to miss the target and a very respectable chance to level was wasted.  H-T 0-1

With an hour played, Heanor were awarded a penalty for a mistimed challenge in the box, and BENGER made no mistake from the spot.  Westfields were soon back in the lead though, HAM again on the scoresheet.  As the visitors knocked the ball forward, it appeared that the Assistant on the far side had raised a flag for an offside – a flag the Referee Tom Kidd ignored, waved the play on allowing the Westfields big no. 9 to run and smash a terrific shot into the top corner. If Heanor had have heeded the old adage of play to the whistle, they may have closed Ham down, but they didn’t and were duly punished.

As the game entered the last 15 minutes, Heanor began to show a little more spirit and took the game to their visitors. Sub JACK WARNER was on the line to prod home Shaun Roulstone’s header from a corner to bring the scores level again, then a minute or so later, COOPER tried his luck from 20 yards and the ball cannoned off the inside of the post before nestling in the back of the net.

COOPER added more misery to the Westfield travelling few just before the final whistle – dribbling his way into the box before taking time to pick his spot and fire the ball past keeper Matthew Gwynne. F-T 4-2

A remarkable turn around from the Derbyshire outfit, and I’m sure that the Westfields fans, players, management must have travelled back down to Hereford wondering how the heck they lost this game, especially after such a poor performance in the first hour from their hosts.
