Me and the daftlad were back on the road, albeit just a few miles across the Notts/Derbys county border. There were plenty of familiar faces present and we took up our favoured position with Heanor regulars Chris and Alan in the stand behind the top goal. We were later joined by Blidworth's Scott Ward and prolific hopper Pete Chappell - and the general consensus was that although Heanor eventually won the game by a reasonably comfortable scoreline, they should have killed the game off early doors.

Tividale looked a very young side, but were arguably the footballing better side in the first half.  Heanor fluffed a plethora of chances midway through the first period, and their profligacy was punished on 39, when Daniel Smith converted a cross from the right after some really neat passing play had left the home defence flat-footed. H-T 0-1

Nathan Benger’s 55th equaliser for the home team was somewhat controversial, and the “was it in, wasn’t in it” debate lasted a fair few minutes. Did it hit the keeper’s water bottle? Was it over the line? The goal was eventually given after Referee Darren Laska took advice from his assistant. The ball was down at the foot of the post and was heading over the line before it was cleared. From my point of view (behind the goal), the whole of the ball hadn’t crossed the line. My poor eyesight has been brought into question on many occasions in the past though, and as the goal was given, who am I to argue?

Alex Brown added a second for Town on 65, firing in off the bar. Town youngster Keenan Layton fired in from an acute angle to make it 3-1 on 80, and from an even more acute angle to make it 4-1 on 85. Two cracking finishes, but the goalkeeping for the final goal left a little to be desired, to say the least.

Heanor should have won by an even greater margin, but the usually dependant Benger had a bit of a ‘mare in front of goal – he should have scored more than the one he did chalk up, but I suppose everyone is entitled to an off day.

Listened to Radio Nottingham on the way home and had to smile when Notts County boss John Sheridan talked about his “game of two halves” (Notts lost again) – we were certainly treated to a “game of two halves”, but in reality Heanor should have had the result sewn up in the first half.
F-T 4-1

That was the week, that was!!!

What a strange old week in football that was!

Sunday 4th December saw me and half a dozen other brave souls visit the fridge freezer that is commonly known as Eagle Valley, the home of Arnold Town. The fixture was an East Midlands Regional league match between Rise Park Ladies and Ruddington Village Ladies that was a comfortable 4-1 home victory.  Always one for bigging up the ladies game, I have to relate that this game wasn’t the worst women’s game I’ve ever watched, but it wasn’t far off!

Monday afternoon was again a cold one – but at least at Coronation Park the football was worth venturing out in the cold.  This game was a Central Conference League Cup game between Alfreton Town U18 Academy and the PSUSA U18 Academy with a 2pm kick off. I can find no reference to this competition at all – but Alfreton (who were down as the home team) won the encounter by three goals to one.

Tuesday nights game was Clipstone v Rainworth MW in the Notts F.A. Senior Cup. Spent the entire game in the company of old friend and AFC Mansfield manager Rudy Funk. I’ve known Rudy for years – and we had a lot of catching up to do as we’ve not met socially for quite a while. The game ended one apiece and the 30 minutes extra time that followed was dire, to say the least. Rainworth went through to the quarter finals after winning the penalty shoot-out 8-7. Their reward a home tie against either Real Utd of Arnold Town.

Wednesday I went to Highfields, ostensibly to watch Nottm University Men’s 4th’s take on Nottm Trent University Men’s 5th’s, but upon arrival it was obvious that the game was not going ahead. So it was over to pitch one, where Nottm University Women’s 2nd’s were to entertain Derby University Women’s 1st’s, a game that ended 3-2 to NUW. Watched the game in the company of Arnold legend / author Roger Rann and we, along with four others constituted the attendance. Now Roger has watched a lot more football than I have over the years, but he had to tell me that 6 was his lowest ever “crowd” figure!

Wednesday evening it was back to Coronation Park for the 7:30pm kick off Notts Senior Cup contest between Eastwood CFC and Carlton Town. Kick off was actually 7:45pm, and to call it a contest is a bit of a misnomer. Carlton won with some ease, scoring six without reply.

Thursday was supposed to have been Heanor U21 v Eastwood U21, but that was called off on Wednesday. Second choice Ilkeston v AFC Mansfield was also called off, so I decided to call Thursday off.

Friday’s U21 game between Chesterfield and Handsworth Parramore due to be played at Eastwood was called off. The NMDFL seem to be very accommodating when it comes to teams calling games off.  It’s a good job the league constitutions are relatively small, or the season would never get finished! The Collingham v Newark game was never an option for me – family matters taking preference.

Saturday morning I had decided to visit Coronation Park yet again, this time to watch a Notts Youth League U18 cup game between Eastwood CFC and Arnold Town. Advertised as an 11:30 ko, this game actually started at 12:10pm due to an U12 cup game, already being played, going into extra time. The U18 game finished 1-1, and although extra-time was to be played, I couldn’t stay for it as I needed go home and prepare myself for Saturday’s main event – the CMFL game between Eastwood CFC and Keyworth United at, you guessed it, Coronation Park!  So after a quick coffee and sandwich, it was back to Eastwood with Kev, and what a game we were treated to! Keyworth took an early lead, but that was soon cancelled out and the teams went in at half time all square. The Keyworth keeper was a little suspect to say the least, and he was beaten five more times as Eastwood peppered his goal. The away team did bring it back to 5-4 towards the end of the game, but the Eastwood sixth finally saw Keyworth’s shoulders drop and made them realise that defeat was inevitable. .

The Eastwood U12’s won their tie 5-4, whilst the U18’s won theirs 3-1. Along with the first team’s successful 6-4 win, this must be considered a very good day for all concerned at the club, and it has to be said, a very enjoyable one for yours truly!

Blidworth Welfare 1-1 Sherwood Colliery 26th October

Central Midlands League South Division - ko 3:00pm

I was supposed to be going to Wollaton Res v Gedling Southbank to catch the return fixture of the game I watched in August, a game that Southbank won 5-2.  It was a pity I couldn't get to the fixture for the 2:00pm kick off time, because it ended 4-4 with Southbank coming from 4-1 down with 10 men!

Opted for the 3:00pm fixture between Blidworth and Sherwood Colliery, and although I arrived early, I had to park quite a long way from the ground. The car park had a Christmas Fayre going on - and when you add to this that the game was watched by over 120 people (quite a few in the bar taking a few pre-match bevvies) and you can see why parking was so difficult.  Apparently Blidworth have a new following "massive" - Stags fans that can't travel to away games!  They certainly gave the place an atmosphere it sometimes lacks, singing, shouting, setting off flares and generally having a great time.

Spent the game in the company of  "ontheroad" friend Scott Ward, programme editor and Blidworth stalwart - he was certainly loving the newest intake of the Blidworth Army - and seldom have I seen him smile so much (not since the Heanor game anyway!)

Line ups:
Welfare: Mike Ball, Ben Burbanks, James Vickers, Josh Cairns, Jacob Lowe, Ben Rogers (c), Gareth Curtis, Brendan Williams, Olly Ashton, Keenan Leeds, Tim Gregory. Subs: Jake Eggington, Jake Towers, Grant Tobin, Luke Thomas, Keir Webster

Colliery: Alex Smith, Steve Sowter, Ricky Starbuck, Jobe Shaw ( c), Jordan Harris, Danny Williams, Jamie York, Ashley Kitchen, Liam Theakstone, Dale Gilliatt, Jamie Meehan. Subs:  Liam Calver, Liam Green, Ewan Robson, Gavin King, Jimmy Adcock

Not too much to write about the game, it was always going to be a tight affair, with Sherwood favourites based on league position. The home team didn't let that bother them though and they took a deserved lead on 13 when OLLY ASHTON fired home from close range after Sherwood had failed to deal with a corner. A couple of flares went up - and we had a short break in play whist the smoke cleared.  This was becoming a feature of the game, but with little or no breeze to speak of, the haze lingered for quite a while.  H-T 1-0

Sherwood came out all guns blazing in the second half, but some strong defending and a superb display from Michael Ball in the home goal kept the Mansfield outfit at bay.  More smoke and a chorus of "he's got a smoke bomb on his head, he's got a smoke bomb on his head" went up after one of the fans actually set one off on his head!!! Crazy, but hilarious!! You had to be there........

All was going well for the Welfare until the 89th minute - then a defensive lapse in concentration saw the ball played out to sub LIAM GREEN who joyfully fired home to level the scores. This was greeted with a few jeers, and these certainly increased in volume when Sherwood boss Wayne Savage ran onto the pitch to celebrate in front of them. F-T 1-1

Would have loved to have been at the Wollaton fixture, but this game was one I am pleased I didn't miss! Great fun - no one hurt - points shared and the club made a few bob on the gate and sold out of pies as well! I wonder what will be in store on Wednesday when Blidworth entertain Matlock Town Res in the CML cup?

A few pics ( none of the game though!!)
