Sunday 26th - Thursday 30th March. A few notes.....

A few notes from “ontheroad” games, Sunday 26th to Thursday 30th March

Sunday’s match was at Eagle Valley, and saw Arnold Town LFC host Bedworth Utd LFC in front of a “crowd” of twenty or so. The points went back to Warwickshire, thanks to a goal either side of the break from striker Jodie McGuckin. Unfortunately I didn’t take any notes at this game, and with my memory not being what it once was, I can't think of anything further to add. F-T 0-2

Tuesday’s game was an NCEL Div fixture at the Carnarvon Street home of Teversal FC. The visitors were Hall Road Rangers, who needed a win to take them level on points with second placed Pontefract Colliery.

The first half wasn’t a spectacle by any means, but 10 minutes into the second period, Rangers went ahead, thanks to a neat volley from substitute striker Gareth Owen. The home team were soon back on level terms though. On the hour mark, Dave Cockerill received the ball in the right hand corner of the pitch. His control and dribbling skills enabled him to fend off all challenges and direct a pass to his strike partner at the far stick. The strikers effort was parried by Hall Road keeper Phil Dobson, but the ball cannoned off defender Sam Belcher and flew into the net. As hard as the visitors tried, they couldn’t penetrate the Teversal back line again and the game ended all square at one-apiece. Entry £5.00 / £2.50 concession. Attendance 53.

Wednesday saw me make the short trip to the Stag Ground to see Kimberley MW take on Blaby & Whetsone Athletic in an East Midlands Counties League game.

This game ended in controversy, abandoned by Referee Kelvin Wilson with just under an hour played. The game was decent fayre throughout the first half, and it was only a momentary lapse in concentration by Josh Stevenson on 40 that handed Blaby the lead. The Kimberley defender seemed to be unaware that keeper Rikki Turner had advanced to clear a high ball, and proceeded to head the ball over him straight to Blaby's Rikki Bates who had the simple task of running the ball into the empty net.  H-T 0-1.

Blaby added a second on 52 when the unfortunate Stevenson failed to deal with a ball fired into the six yard box, succeeding only in setting up Aaron Preston who duly smashed the ball past Turner from just inside the 6 yard box.  Alex Marshall was given a straight red on 54 when his two-footed lunge was ruled to be dangerous play by Mr. Wilson.  Seconds later, it appeared that Kimberley manager Ian Deakin had also been dismissed – although no card was shown.  I’m not sure how it works – Deakin was told to go in no uncertain terms by the Referee, but as he was also on the bench as a substitute, should he have been shown a red card if he had acted improperly? I say “if he had acted improperly” – a man is innocent until proven guilty and there will be an official inquiry involving the league and the F.A., so best leave it there, eh? Abandoned on 57 minutes with Blaby winning 2-0 and Kimberly down to 10 men. In my humble opinion the result should stand, but I doubt it will. Entry £5.00 / £3.00 concession.

Thursday night’s game was a Notts Combination League Cup semi-final between ABP FC and Eastwood CFC (Sunday) played at Basford Utd.  No team details available. Admission £2.00/ £1.00 concessionABP currently lie second in the Div One table, a win needed from their final league game to secure them the title. Eastwood are managed by Matt Hind, who had been kind enough to put me a “ticket” on the gate. It was strange seeing so many Kimberley MW faces at this game – but it seems that quite a few of the Eastwood players play for KMW ressies. With Welfare’s Neil Boyd and Danny Staley also involved pitch side, it appears that they are getting along quite nicely with their “noisy neighbours”…..

It was a fairly even first 45 in which both keepers were called into action a several occasions. I can’t recall watching a Notts Combination game before, but the standard was fine, with both teams showing plenty of quality and ability.  Eastwood were awarded a penalty early doors, but the kick was well saved by the ABP keeper. H-T 0-0

Aaron Large is a quality player, and it was his 22 yard free-kick that finally beat the Eastwood keeper in the 56th minute, the ball hit perfectly into the far corner of the net.  It was Large on the mark again four minutes later, drilling the ball home from close range after he was picked out in front of goal.  Eastwood tried to get back into the game, but with 10 to play, the ABP no. 11 hacked the ball home from after Eastwood had failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Goal of the game was scored by Eastwood though. In added time, Martin Lench unleashed a shot from 25 yards that flew across the ABP keeper before crashing into the far side of the goal. Great hit, but too little, too late for the Red Badgers. ABP will now face Beeston Hornets in the final of the Edwin Varney Senior Trophy on Thursday 20th April – venue TBC.

Arnold Town 2-2 Radford FC

Tuesday 21st March 2017

Arnold Town 2-2 Radford FC

Competition: East Midlands counties League

Venue: Eagle Valley, Oxton Road, Nottingham

Admission: £5.00 / £3.00 concession

Attendance : 73

Referee: Mr. Darren Tingle

Line-ups:

Arnold Town: Declan Howard, Michael Pearson, Luke Smith ( c), Ryan Charles, James Price, Adam Murphy, Jack Millward, Barry Payne, Jack Allen, Chris Richards, Kaylum Mitchell. Subs: Alex Clarson, Joe Butler, Andreas Fatta, Mason Coy.

Radford: Joe Searson-Smithard, Ashley Miles, Matt Hopewell, Simon Hore, Jean-Ruben Desrosiers, Phil Hinton, Reece Fyfe, Joe Meakin, Ady Hawes, Errol Campbell, Tamar Clayton-Naute. Subs: Scott Eddyshaw, Myles Scott, Joe Evans, Matt Hendy, Tom Black.

There was, apparently, little doubt that this game was to go ahead – and the pitch was a cracker for this time of the season – can’t say the same about the Eagle Valley car-park though. Although the recent heavy rainfall has filled in the numerous pot-holes, making them easy to spot, the walk to and from the ground the ensures that the morning following sees the car mats having to be scrubbed, the hall carpet shampooed, and shoes given a good scraping. The car-park, for those who haven’t had the pleasure, is a mess when wet – and the damn mud sticks to everything…

Arnold are losing the services of manager David Marlow at the end of the season, applications for his replacement are currently being accepted – contact the club via email at arnoldtownfc@hotmail.co.uk (closing date 2nd April).

As usual, it was bitterly cold at Eagle Valley, with a wind that cut right through you….and then it rained – oh, how it rained. Full credit to the players and officials – this was not a pleasant valley Tuesday…..

Radford had the games first chance in just the fourth minute when Reece “Rico” Fyfe picked out Phil Hinton who saw his 20 yard effort fumbled by Declan Howard, but the Arnold keeper just managed to grab the loose ball as it rolled towards the goal.

Arnold had a Luke Smith corner hacked away at the far post with eight played, but their best chance early doors fell to Jack Allen. James Price hammered a free-kick into the Radford wall, and although it fell kindly to Allen, his shot flew wide of the upright.

The striker was to make amends some sixty seconds later though when his volley on the turn, from just inside the box, flew past Radford keeper Joe Searson-Smithard.  Great hit – I really hope the video camera operator captured it!

Radford were level on 18, Joe Meakin’s corner from the left reaching the far stick, where Errol Campbell was on hand to force it home despite the close attention of the Arnold defenders.

Allen tried his luck again on 24, but his shot on this occasion was well gathered by Searson-Smithard. Radford went close two minutes later after Tamar Clayton-Naute rolled the ball into Campbell’s path - but Howard was alert and made a decent block.

Kaylum Mitchell hit a superb drive on the half hour, but Searson-Smithard made a terrific save, tipping the ball over for a corner. The next Arnold attack saw Mitchell played in by Millward, but this time the final shot didn’t trouble the Radford keeper, who watched calmly as it flew over his bar.

With four minutes of the half remaining, Allen fired a fierce drive across the goal , but it crashed against the inside of the post before rolling agonisingly across the line before being cleared to safety.

Arnold’s Adam Murphy was cautioned on 44 after a rash challenge in midfield. From the resultant free-kick Ady Hawes was played in on goal and made no mistake from just inside the box, giving Radford the advantage at the break. H-T 1-2

The visitors came out for the second period on the front foot, and Arnold had Howard to thank again when he punched away a well placed Meakin corner. The first Arnold attack of the half came in the 50th minute and saw them draw level. Another terrific ball from midfield maestro Millward to pick out Mitchell, and this time the no. 11 made no mistake, running at the goal and firing across Searson-Smithard into the far corner. Great pass, great goal!

Conditions were now foul, the wind and driving rain making life difficult on and off the pitch. Anyone who knows Eagle Valley knows it is usually cold there – I’ve even been in May and it’s been a bit chilly – but the damp and the cold together made this a really uncomfortable night.

Radford had a series of corners as the hour mark approached, and Ruben Desrosiers should have headed them in front from one of Meakin’s set pieces, but failed to connect with the goal gaping.  On 70, Fyfe saw his drive fly into the side-netting after Howard had parried a Clayton-Naute shot straight to his feet.  Clayton-Naute tried his luck from distance with 10 to play, but fired wide. It was all Radford now and from Meakin’s free kick, Fyfe again saw his shot well saved by Howard.

Myles Scott saw an effort deflected over the bar as Radford strove for the winner, and Fyfe again saw his effort blocked from the resultant corner. In added time Meakin himself was unlucky when Howard saved his drive. After three minutes of added time, Mr. Tingle called an end to proceedings – a great game of football, despite the weather. F-T 2-2

I very seldom criticise the match officials, but I think Mr. Tingle will be a bit disappointed at one or two of his decisions in this game, a couple he actually acknowledged. I won’t go into details, I’m sure Darren will be beating himself up anyway…

Four games, 21 goals!

Well that was something of an eclectic week….six games, five different leagues and twenty-six goals! The first two games have already been blogged, and the following is a brief summary of the other four.

PART 1 (midweek)
Heanor Town U21 2-5 Ilkeston Town U21

Thursday 9th March 2017 k.o. 7:45pm

The Town Ground, Heanor

NMDFL UNDER 21 SOUTH

Admission: £2.00

Attendance: H/C 50

Referee: Mr. Richard Goodwin

Line-ups – not known

Ilkeston took the lead on 14, Jack Walker lifting the ball over the advanced Ilkeston keeper from 25 yards. The scores were level with 33 minutes played, the Ilkeston no. 9 knocking the ball home at the far post after the home defence had failed to effectively clear a corner. Two minutes before the break, the visitors were awarded a penalty and their no. 10 stepped up to smash the ball home. H-T 1-2.
It became 1-3 on 52 when a well placed looping header by the Ilkeston no. 12 shirt cleared the Heanor keeper and dipped under the bar. On the hour mark, Heanor reduced their arrears, Ollie Naylor drilling home the rebound after a shot had cannoned off the far post.

Five minutes later the visitors restored their two goal advantage when the no. 11 ran into the area and slotted home. The no. 9 rounded off the scoring on 82, slotting the ball across the keeper after he had left two defenders in his wake. F.T 2-5.

Chesterfield FC 0-2 Handsworth Parramore

Friday 10th March 2017 k.o 8:00pm

Coronation Park, Eastwood

NMDFL UNDER 21 NORTH
Admission: FOC
Attendance : H/C 20
Referee: Mr. Alistair Nelson
Line-ups – not known

This was Handsworth’s final league game of the season, and although they now sit six points clear at the top of the table on 38 points, Sheffield Utd still have three games left to play, sitting second on 32 points.
Handsworth have had three points deducted from their record - just how vital could that be to their title chances?

The only goal of the first half was a stunner – MITCHELL DUNNE hit a 35 yard volley with the outside of his boot that gave the Spirite keeper no chance. H-T 0-1
The game was end to end, but was finally settled with eight to play when RYAN LEE hit a tame shot that inexplicably slipped through the keeper’s hands, and also through his legs before nestling in the back of the net. F-T 0-2.

PART 2 (Saturday)

Basford Utd CFC 5-2 Awsworth Villa
Saturday 11th March 2017 k.o. 12 noon
Greenwich Avenue, Basford
NSL PREMIER DIVISION
Admission: £2.00 / £1.00 concession
Attendance – TBC
Referee: Mr. Mick Leslie
Line-ups - not known
This 3G venue is fast becoming a favourite of mine, and today saw it host two games - this 12 noon kick off was followed by the Basford first team v Gresley FC at 3pm. I am planning to be back at Basford next Saturday when they take on league leaders Shaw Lane, so opted to take in just the first game and head off to Selston for my 3pm game.
Basford took a well deserved lead on 14 – makeshift striker Jamie Walker heading powerfully home from lose range.  Walker is a full back by trade, but was on the score sheet again on 26, looping a terrific 25 yard shot over the poorly positioned visiting keeper. Walker was however foiled by the Awsworth stopper’s diving save on 29, then the visitors cleared an effort off the line to keep the deficit to just the two goals.
Awsworth began making inroads into the home defence as the half progressed, and they were back in it when Matt Goodwin forced his way into the Basford area, drilled the ball across the goal and was delighted to see it strike the inside of the post before rolling into the goal.  H-T 2-1
Jack Duffy headed powerfully against the bar from a Basford corner with just seconds of the second period played, then Zaire Jackson-Birchall hit a shot just over as Basford tried to re-establish control early in the half.
Awsworth’s first attack of the half saw Goodwin just fail to connect with a cross from the right on 53, but five minutes later Jackson-Birchall beat Awsworth defender Lee Stevenson to the ball and hit a fierce drive that the keeper got a hand to, but couldn’t keep out.
Awsworth were the next to score, this time their no. 15 taping home in the 73rd minute after Basford’s keeper had parried a stinging drive. The visitors had a couple of chances to level the scores but were unable to make their pressure pay, and Ewan Sweeting eased that pressure for the home team on 82, racing into the box after shrugging off a challenge and driving the ball home. Jack Duffy added a fifth for Basford with five left to play, a crashing thunderbolt of a shot that was in the net before keeper could react. F-T 5-2

There has been a lot of time and effort spent on the groundworks at the Parish, with the hope that promotion can be a real possibility at the end of the season, dependant of course that the team finishes the season in a promotion place. I don’t think that is a doubt, but stranger things have happened!
The home team were looking to keep their four game unbeaten run going, and had a chance to go ahead in just the ninth minute, but Ben Moore saw his free-kick well saved by keeper Stanley.  The visiting stopper did really well again three minutes later, this time tipping a Sean Gregory pin-point side-foot effort onto the bar.  Stanley was beaten seconds later though, a Ben Moore penalty, awarded after Gregory had been adjudged to have been tripped in the box.

The visitor’s toils were not helped when Brett Solza received a straight red from Mr. Shaw in the 21st  minute – presumably for something he said.
Selston added a second goal with 27 played, Elliott Jones hitting a superbly weighted pass to Ben Moore who hit the ball perfectly with his left peg from 20+ yards and it flew as straight as a arrow into the roof of the net.
Wayne Cooke had the simple task of taping home the Selston third, after Grant Hackett’s cross was allowed to sail straight across the area. The fourth goal came with ten minutes of the half remaining, Kane Hempshall rising well to head home Gregory’s right wing cross.  H-T 4-0
Jones fizzed a shot past the post within seconds of the restart, but despite piling the pressure on their visitors defence, it took until the 80th minute before Selston added their fifth. It was Jones who netted, a simple tap in after he was picked out at the near post. F-T 5-0
