Competition : East Midlands counties League Cup 1/4 final

Venue: The Stag Ground, Kimberley, Notts

Admission: £3.00 concession

Attendance : 68

Teams:-

Kimberley: Bodkin (c), Wrenn, Webster, Dale, Hogg, Williams, Morley, Simmons, Hassall, Smith, Carlile. Subs: Moran, Stevenson, Campbell, Lench, Turner

Dunkirk: Mitchell, Wilcox, Rawdon, Gowing, Moore, Burton, Smithson, Maddison, Lang, Chaplin, Fairclough. Subs: Berridge, Norris, Clark, Robinson.

This game was postponed last week after local Referee Tom Beard gave the pitch the thumbs down.  A midday inspection was requested before the re-scheduled game, and on this occasion Mr. Beard deemed the pitch playable.

The pitch was very heavy in places, but I have seen worse recently, and as the game progressed the decision to give the go ahead appeared to be spot on.  Maybe after the game was over, Kimberley would think otherwise!!

The first chance of the game fell to Dunkirk’s Tom Maddison in just the second minute, but his effort was well saved by Welfare keeper Shaun Bodkin.  Felix Hogg almost conceded on own goal soon after, his inadvertent deflection wrong footing Bodkin but luckily for Hogg the ball flew past the outside of the post.

Paris Simmons had the home team’s first real chance on 20, but Liam Mitchell in the Dunkirk goal made a terrific save to keep out the effort and keep the scores level.

BEN GOWING opened the scoring for the visitors three minutes later, lifting the ball over the outstretched arms of Bodkin from the corner of the box.  Ben Fairclough went over in the penalty area on the half hour mark and Referee Mr. Thomas awarded  a penalty – looked to be a “soft one” as they say, and when Bodkin dived to his right to save Maddison’s kick, it seemed like justice had been served.  H-T 0-1

Another “soft” penalty was given within five minutes of the restart, this time to the home team.  Dunkirk’s Will Rawdon appeared to have been pushed in the back by Kimberley’s Adam Morley, but when both players fell to the ground, it was adjudged that Rawdon was actually the culprit and the penalty given.  ADAM HASSALL made no mistake from the spot and brought the dreaded extra-time to mind for the first time, even though there was a long way to go before the final whistle.

As it transpired, Dunkirk ought to have put this game to rest before the 90 minutes were up – they had chance after chance, but were guilty of some profligate “finishing” and this, along with some superb saves from Bodkin, saw the game end with the teams level. F-T 1-1

With the temperature hovering around freezing, extra-time was not welcome – brass monkey weather it really was…..

Seven minutes into the first period of extra-time, Dunkirk took the lead through sub ROB NORRIS. A disputed throw in was taken by Lewis Wilcox to Gowing, and the no. 4 fired across the goal to the far stick where Norris was on hand to fire home. H-T 1-2

Kimberley began the final 15 minute period on the front foot,  posing the visitors’ defence plenty of problems, but finding the imposing Mitchell not only on top form, but also in super slow motion mode. Every trick in the book was used by the experienced Dunkirk stopper to use up time, and even a caution failed to inject any hurry into the big man.

Dunkirk wrapped the game up with two minutes remaining – Kimberley were over committed up front, and when OLIVER CLARK rounded his marker, he found room to fire low into the bottom corner, thus ending the contest.  F-T 1-3

Spent the game in the company of Macca, Pete Chappell and Tony Squires, although Mr. Chappell failed to complete the 120 minutes due to the fact he is a bit nesh…..having said that, it was a bit Baltic at the Stag, and he wasn’t the only spectator who didn’t stay for the duration.

Wednesday 1st February 2017

Venue: Greenwich Avenue 3G facility

Competition:  National U19 Alliance Div H

Kick off : 1:45pm

Admission : £0

Attendance: 12

Getting used to mid-afternoon games now – and loving retirement! This game was a National U19 Alliance league fixture between leaders Basford Utd and 5th placed Peterborough United. Basford have only lost once in the league this term, a 4-1 reverse at Peterborough in September, so the young homesters were out for revenge…

I arrived at Greenwich Avenue at 1:44pm for a 2:00pm kick-off, only to find the teams already lined up, and Referee Lee Chappell and assistants already in position.

A 6th minute goal for the home team was the dream start they were hoping for, NICK KNIGHT on hand at the far post to stab home after a Callum Smith corner had been headed on.  Chance after chance fell to Basford after the goal, but the youngsters were somewhat lacking in the finishing department. On 14, Cardell Lubban managed to side-foot wide from two yards out with the goal gaping, then Smith thumped a great effort against the foot of the post 6 minutes later. These misses, along with a couple more, were to prove costly in the short term, as Peterborough gradually began to show their teeth, and with 27 played they equalised through DYLAN WILSON, the no. 11 driving a shot under the home keeper’s body.

Basford continued to press and on the half hour mark, Lubban saw his fierce drive well blocked by the visiting keeper – seconds later Diaz Cameron saw his goal-bound effort deflected away for a corner.  Four minutes later, the home team were left ruing their missed opportunities when from a corner kick, BEN WELCH rose well in the box to power a header home to gave the visitors a surprise half-time lead. H-T 1-2

From the restart, Basford poured forward, and had one early effort crash off the crossbar. With just three minutes of the second half played, they restored parity when CAMERON headed home a Will Brown corner from the edge of the six-yard box. Sully Azzouz saw his effort on 52 well blocked by a defender soon after, then Knight failed to properly connect with Brown’s pin-point free-kick.

Posh had a long-range effort thud off the Basford bar on 70, but then the next Basford foray up the pitch saw them retake the lead. Brown’s corner from the left was met at the near post with a neat back header from ROBBIE MCNICHOLAS, the ball flying into the net. LUBBAN added a fourth for Basford on 79, driving low and hard under the keeper from the corner of the area. With five to play, REMEL WHITE rolled the ball home to make the game safe. One worry for the home team will be the injury sustained by Smith soon after.  The challenge looked innocuous, but left the star in the making clutching his ankle.  Basford had played all three subs, but it was decided it would be best to take the player out of the action. His absence mattered little, as in the 3nd minute of added time, LUBBAN ran onto a perfect pass from White and slotted home with some ease. F-T 6-2

This academy football is well worth watching – although only a dozen or so bothered on this occasion. With plenty of time on my hands, I am looking forward to more and more mid-afternoon games!!!

Spent the game in the company of South Normanton die-hard, Lance Henderson – this was his first ever visit to Chewton Street. His first-choice game between Borrowash Victoria and South Normanton Athletic had fallen foul of the weather earlier in the day.
We didn’t have long to wait for the game’s opening goal – their first venture forward in the third minute culminated with SAM SIMMS’ hopeful long range effort deflecting off a defender, completely wrong-footing CFC keeper Jack Walker and nestling in the back of the net.
Eastwood stand-in striker Kyle McDermott saw his shot cannon off the bar with five played, then seconds later his opposite number Shaun Smith failed to connect when one on one with Walker.  In the eighth minute Danny Riley unleashed a terrific drive that stung Walker’s hands as the teams continued in full on attack mode….
McDermott was foiled by Charlie Mansfield on 22, the keeper’s diving save bringing out a well-earned round of applause from around the ground.  The visitors should have increased their lead on 40, but from a right-wing corner Tom Lewis headed straight into the arms of Walker. The next Eastwood foray forward produced a great chance for Rory Smith to level, but he managed to head the ball into the ground in front of goal and watched in agony as it bounced off the pitch and over the crossbar.  H-T 0-1

Half-time

Jack Smith hit a 20 yard free-kick straight into Mansfield’s arms on 55, then shortly after, Shaun Smith brought out a smart save from Walker. McDermott failed to connect inn front of goal when played in from the left. James Hallam joined proceeding midway through the second period and the youngster was immediately in action, sending in a terrific cross from the right that Kane Matthews met with a fierce volley that flew just wide of the Normanton goal.
With 79 played Jack Smith’s corner was headed over from in front of goal by Harry Allen, but the visitors doubled their lead on 85 when they were awarded a soft penalty that was converted by TOM LEWIS.  Eastwood were to reduce their arrears from the spot, JACK SMITH converting.  The home team ought to have had a share of the points in added time, but Allen failed to convert after Mansfield had parried a shot and the ball fell invitingly to the feet of the striker. F-T 1-2

Lewis on the spot....

... Smith too !!
