Spent the game in the company of South Normanton die-hard, Lance Henderson – this was his first ever visit to Chewton Street. His first-choice game between Borrowash Victoria and South Normanton Athletic had fallen foul of the weather earlier in the day.

We didn’t have long to wait for the game’s opening goal – their first venture forward in the third minute culminated with SAM SIMMS’ hopeful long range effort deflecting off a defender, completely wrong-footing CFC keeper Jack Walker and nestling in the back of the net.

Eastwood stand-in striker Kyle McDermott saw his shot cannon off the bar with five played, then seconds later his opposite number Shaun Smith failed to connect when one on one with Walker.  In the eighth minute Danny Riley unleashed a terrific drive that stung Walker’s hands as the teams continued in full on attack mode….

McDermott was foiled by Charlie Mansfield on 22, the keeper’s diving save bringing out a well-earned round of applause from around the ground.  The visitors should have increased their lead on 40, but from a right-wing corner Tom Lewis headed straight into the arms of Walker. The next Eastwood foray forward produced a great chance for Rory Smith to level, but he managed to head the ball into the ground in front of goal and watched in agony as it bounced off the pitch and over the crossbar.  H-T 0-1

Half-time

Jack Smith hit a 20 yard free-kick straight into Mansfield’s arms on 55, then shortly after, Shaun Smith brought out a smart save from Walker. McDermott failed to connect inn front of goal when played in from the left. James Hallam joined proceeding midway through the second period and the youngster was immediately in action, sending in a terrific cross from the right that Kane Matthews met with a fierce volley that flew just wide of the Normanton goal.

With 79 played Jack Smith’s corner was headed over from in front of goal by Harry Allen, but the visitors doubled their lead on 85 when they were awarded a soft penalty that was converted by TOM LEWIS.  Eastwood were to reduce their arrears from the spot, JACK SMITH converting.  The home team ought to have had a share of the points in added time, but Allen failed to convert after Mansfield had parried a shot and the ball fell invitingly to the feet of the striker. F-T 1-2

This was bitterly cold afternoon at Rainworth – the sun may have been shining, but trust me it was freezing!! I was joined at pitch side by Linby CW manager Lewis Saxby – just when it looked like I was to be “Billy No-mates” again! 

Mansfield looked dangerous right from the off, and we knew straight away that this game wouldn’t be a stalemate, as was the U18 game on Tuesday! With 10 played, Harrison Biggins saw his header crash off the bar as Mansfield pressed,  then five minutes later the Stags endeavours paid off when Kieran Harrison nodded home from a corner.  Tyler Blake was looking lively up top for Town – the same couldn’t be said for Hakeem, who in reality, was hardly able to get involved throughout his time on the pitch.

It was Blake who doubled the home teams lead on 27, blasting home after Cameron Healey’s header had rebounded off the bar. Three minutes later, Blake was on hand to prod home after the York keepers fumble created a mad scramble at the near post.

Blake completed a first half hat-trick on 38, this time unleashing a low drive from the corner of the box that gave York keeper Whitley no chance. H-T 4-0

The second half was different again to the first – with York doing all the pressing. The Stags barely troubled Whitley as the half wore on, and with Sam Fielding pulling the strings, we were wondering where this attacking force was during the first 45  minutes!   The visitors left it too late to get anything out of the game, but did manage to grab a couple of goals to make the score a little more respectable.

Fielding’s through ball to Aaron Haswell on 86 was sublime, giving the York sub a straight run at goal and with only Sundby to beat, he made no mistake, placing the ball wide of the keeper.  Three minute later and it was Fielding again the provider, this time a quality free-kick into the area that Ryan Edmondson headed home from close range.

Saturday afternoon we decided to stay local – another chance to see if our home team could consolidate their third place in the league against a Keyworth side who are struggling for form, with only 3 wins from their 17 game prior to kick off.

Keyworth held the Yellows at bay early doors, but they were undone when a corner from the right was headed home at the near post by Jordan Phillips.  Phillips then tried his luck from 25 yards but the Keyworth keeper did well to tip the goal-bound effort over the bar and into the gardens on Salterford Road.

The second Yellows’ goal came on 37, striker Ashley Whitt stabbing home Leon Aikman’s superb ball fired in from the right. Aikman was on the scoresheet himself seconds later - his speculative 25 yard shot was well blocked by the Keyworth keeper, but unfortunately he let the ball slip from his grasp and turned to watch in disbelief as it nestled in the bottom corner.

Aikman, who was firing on all six in the middle of the park, also had a downward header cleared off the line with seconds of the first half remaining. H-T 3-0

It was Hucknall all the way as the second half wore on, and only some superb saves from the United keeper kept the scoreline respectable.  With 20 to play Cameron Davidson played a terrific ball forward that Aikmen met on the volley, unfortunately for the midfielder, the effort flew just wide of the post. 

Town did add a fourth on 83,  Aikman again the provider - his neat ball across the goal placed wide of the keeper by sub Adam Nelson. F-T 4-0

Friday night football – I love it. It seems to becoming more and more popular -  the CMFL had Teversal v Blidworth, and in the U21 league, Eastwood were at home to Belper Town. More please...

A very cold evening, but as with most 3G venues, this game was never in doubt. Watched the game with Pete, Macca and Wayne Morrison, and as usual the banter was quality, most of it regarding the state of my hooter! We all get spots every now and again, but this was a beauty and was glowing bright red…all the old Rudolph puns were there in numbers, as was the gesture of warming of the hands in front of a fire. Very funny, but that bastard of a zit was very painful and the freezing conditions didn’t help. White face – blazing red snout…..no sympathy from so called friends. I’ll get them back some time in the future, trust me!

Basford and Wollaton lie fourth and fifth respectively in the league, so on paper this looked like would be a decent game, although for the first 15 minutes it was all a little cat and mouse. That changed on 17 when Jack Duffy gave Basford the lead, firing into the top corner, giving the Wollo keeper no chance. The lead was cancelled out on the half hour mark, when Jake Fisher stooped low to head home from a few feet out after Jay Knight had headed on from a long throw. There were plenty of cries for the lino to give an offside decision, but there was a Basford player on the line defending the far post, so quite rightly, the goal stood. H-T 1-1

Wollaton took the lead within just three minutes of the restart. From a right wing corner, Jay Knight’s neat flick saw the ball crash off the underside of the bar and into the net. Cracking improvisation by JJ, and well worth winning any game. Unfortunately for Wollaton his strike was bettered in the 85^th minute – Malcolm Podier running across the 18 yard box before curling a beauty into the top corner. The keeper could only watch in admiration, as did everyone else in the ground. Fisher did have the ball in the net again for Wollaton in added time, but was adjudged to have been in an offside position when he collected the ball. F-T 2-2

Great game – some very good players on the pitch – and it was great to see Ashley Grayson and Billy Bennett back in action – class acts….. although Grayson's miss from 2 yards out will probably go down as my miss of the season!!

Another two games – again just a few notes.

Arranged to meet “Mr. Mac” at the ground for this noon kick off – it’s a good job we were a few minutes early as this actually turned into a morning kick-off as play commenced at 11:55am.

Basford beat Main 7-0 at their ground last week, with Cardill Lubban netting four times. On this occasion the striker had to take a back seat as he only managed a brace whilst Callum Smith emulated his four goal feat. It was Lubban who netted the first in the 5^th minute, with Smith notching 15 minutes later. Lubban made it 3-0 on 42.  H-T 3-0

The goal of the game, and maybe of the season came with 6 minutes of the second half played. Smith collected the ball 10 yards inside his own half and ran straight through the midfield before shrugging off a challenge and firing home from 15 yards. Superb solo effort from a player who looks destined to go far.

Two minutes later, Smith became creator as his well placed free-kick was headed powerfully home at the far post by Robbie McNicholas.  Smith completed his personal treble from the spot on 65, then as Basford eased off a little, Main began to up their game a little and in the 73^rd minute their no.9 raced onto a through ball and fired it home to make it 6-1.

Smith wasn’t finished yet though – adding the home teams seventh, and his fourth, with seven to play. Remel White added the Basford eighth on 88, rounding off a superb performance from the United youngsters. F-T 8-1

Last weeks first team squad against Rugby Town contained McNicholas, Smith and Lubban. With the facilities at Greenwich Avenue improving all the time, the academy is certainly an area where all involved at the club can give themselves a pat on the back – the future of the club is, it seems, being solidified in the classrooms.

As AFC Mansfield’s match day secretary Peter Craggs was unable to attend – missing his first Bulls game ever, or so I was informed, Rob Waite (the66pow) stepped in to do the secretarial work.  I was also informed that manager Rudy Funk had been handed another two years contract at the club. 

At the game with serial hopper Pete Chappell, and after a stale first 45 minutes, we were left wondering if we were going to notch up a dreaded goal-less game. H-T 0-0

Ollie Fearon put those fears to rest on 54, rising salmon-like to nod home from in front of goal.  15 minutes later Fearon double the Bulls’ lead after he smashed the ball past keeper Jody Barford from just inside the penalty area. When James Cullingworth added a third for the Bulls on 77, the game was effectively over, and the final whistle couldn’t arrive quickly enough.  F-T 3-0

Danny Rose slid the ball home from just inside box on 3 minutes and Kevan Hurst curled a 25 yard free-kick into the top left corner on 9 minutes to give the Stags the early advantage.

A free-kick from wide right was played in at the near post on 66, and former Dunkirk winger Sam Osborne steered the ball in at the near post after he was left totally unmarked.

Notts F.A. Senior Cup 1/4 final

Triston Burrell gave the CMFL outfit a surprise lead in just the 4th minute of this NSC quarter final tie, firing home at the far post after the home defence had failed to clear their lines. Carlton looked less than a Northern Premier step four side, and failed to unduly worry Colliery keeper Alex Smith as the firs half progressed. H-T 0-1 

It got even worse for the home fans when Danny Williams added the visitors’ second with just 12 minutes to play. I was with Newark Town Secretary Richard Lane, and I reckon that we have enough experience enough between us to that know 2-0 is sometimes not enough. When Carlton’s Danny Gordon fired home from the edge of the box on 83, we began to get more and more concerned about the possibility of extra-time, and grew more and more fearful that the home team would grab a late equaliser. As the game entered it’s second minute of added time, the inevitable happened. A ball was fired across the Sherwood goal mouth and Josh Rae was on hand to steer it past the unlucky Smith. F-T 2-2

The first period of extra time was unremarkable, but with 6 minutes of the second period commencing, the Millers’ took the lead for the first time in the game, Laurence Gorman firing low and hard past Smith. F-T 3-2

Sherwood were arguably the better team for the most part, and probably deserved to win, but to give Carlton a little credit, even though they were poor on the evening, they never gave up and will now entertain Teversal in the semi-finals.

Weekend - just the 2 games, but 13 goals!

My football weekend was supposed to commence with an U18 game between Mansfield Town and Hartlepool Utd, but the inclement weather forced the game to be postponed. As I had already scheduled Basford Utd v Rugby Town as the “ontheroad” Saturday PM game, I decided to keep to that schedule, putting to one side any thoughts of opting for an even more local game with an earlier kick off.

Basford were looking for a win that would put them in the play-off places, whilst their opponents were looking for only their fifth league win of the season.  The game was fairly close in the first 20 minutes or so, then when Riece Bertram was picked out on the edge of the Rugby box, he made no mistake slotting the ball just inside the post.

After going a goal down, Rugby settled down and really made a decent game of it - Saul Deeney was called into action on several occasions, but in all honesty, his goal never looked like being breached. H-T 1-0

Tyrelle Shannon-Lewis was looking sharp on the left, and when he raced into the box on 47, he was tripped, giving the Referee no alternative other than to award a penalty kick. Ben Hutchinson stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Rugby skipper Callum Burgess was shown a straight red on 56 after a reckless challenge on Shannon-Lewis.  Adding to the punishment, Shannon-Lewis then added the home team's third just after, clipping home a Jamie Walker cross at the near post. Academy youngster Callum Lubban glanced in the Basford fourth with 7 minutes to play, after more good work on the left from Shannon-Lewis.  F-T 4-0

Arnold Town Development LFC v Ollerton Town LFC

Sunday saw me having to stay close to home again, so I chose to make the 15 minute journey to Eagle Valley to see Arnold Town Development Ladies FC entertain Ollerton Town LFC. This was next to bottom v top in the East Midland Regional Womens Football League Div 1 North, and the gulf in status soon became apparent.

Played on one of the outer pitches with no cover, the weather thankfully behaved.  It took just 15 minutes for the Arnold defence to be breached. The ball was played through their backline into the path of Rachael Bell and the striker made no mistake from 10 yards.  A similar move 5 minutes later had the same result, this time Megan Howard supplying the finish. A neat four pass move was culminated with a crisp finish from Jessica Woffenden on 35, then with 3 to play before the break, Natalie Gibson hit a fierce drive from the edge of the box that gave the home keeper no chance. H-T 4-0

Molly Ecott was played in on goal on 65, and slotted home the visitors’ fifth with no trouble. Nine minutes later the ball was deflected home off an Arnold body to make up the half-dozen. Rachael Bell added her second moments later and Ecott also completed a brace after she drove home from 12 yards on 88. Rachel Murray completed the rout with almost the final kick of the game, her long range effort beating the despairing dive of the Arnold keeper. F-T 0-9

A decent weeks football - mostly!

This week's football has been an eclectic mix of cup/league and youth games, beginning with Saturday morning's trip to Rainworth to see the Stags U18 battle out a 1-1 draw with Doncaster Rovers U18. Donny went ahead thanks to Morgan Radcliffe's OG on 13, but Tyler Walker reciprocated in the 58th minute, and on balance the draw was a fair result.

Saturday PM saw us make the short trip to the Stag Ground to watch Kimberley MW entertain Barrow Town in an East Midland Counties League fixture. Tom Marshall gave the home team a 1-0 half-time lead, then an additional strike from Tom Dale and a Connor Carter brace saw the home team run out 4-0 winners in front of a crowd of 62.

Sunday it was Forest Ladies v Wolves Ladies in the FA Women’s Cup. A very entertaining game on Basford's 3G pitch that saw the Lady Reds win 4-0, goals from Charlotte Broad, Kate Lowder and a double from evergreen Andi Bell. Derby County await in the next round.

Monday - back to Greenwich Avenue to see Basford defeat Kimberley MW 5-1 in a Notts F.A. Senior cup 1/4 final. A hat-trick from Kyle Dixon, along with strikes from Courey Grantham and Ben Hutchinson saw Basford ease through to the semis in front of over 140 spectators. The Evo-Stik class much too good for the visitors. Kyle Wrenn netted for Kimberley.

Tuesday was more Senior Cup action, this time at Rainworth to see the NCEL outfit take on Notts Senior League's Real United. It was 4-0 at the break, a brace from Matty Sykes with Matty Harris and Phil Buxton also on the score sheet. Alex Cook grabbed a goal back for Real on 51, Sykes completed his hat-trick on 66, Nick Langford netted on 70, then Harris added his second on 72. Goal of the game came with a minute to play, a 35 yard screamer from Tom Poole that any keeper would have struggled to keep out of the net. Ryan Herbert rounded off the scoring in added time. F-T 9-1. Attendance 55.

Wednesday we made the short trip to Eastwood to see the Red Badgers play local rivals Hucknall Town in a CMFL South fixture. The first half was poor, and although we had a goal from each team in the second period, writing a comprehensive match report would test the mettle of even seasoned journalists.  Eastwood fell behind to a Matt Brian goal on 70, but were level a couple of minutes later, Greg Conn finishing well from close range.

Thursday’s NMDFL game between Heanor Town and Eastwood CFC U21’s was postponed, but it was back to business and back to 3G on Friday, this time at Coronation Park, Eastwood, to see Chesterfield U21’s entertain Sheffield FC U21’s in the NMDFL U21 North. A game between a Derbyshire team and a Yorkshire team played in Nottinghamshire – strange, but well worth the visit, despite the absolute Baltic temperature.  Sheffield took the lead in the 10th minute, but it was downhill all the way from then on. The Spirites levelled through Danny Williams on 20, and the same player gave them the lead a few minutes later. A goal bonanza followed for the “home” team – goals from Ben Cartwright, Owen Murphy (2) and Derik Njike. Sheffield’s reply late on was from Daniel Ramsey, and although the score line of 6-2 looks like it was a stroll for the Spirites, both teams deserve credit for producing a little cracker of a game.  Attendance H/C 30
